Three years ago I moved back to the Netherlands after having lived abroad for 15  years. The country had changed, I had changed, but funnily enough I was little aware of this. I had spent my formative years in Britain and abroad and discovered that my experience had been very different from what was common in the Netherlands. 

And even though I am a fluent Dutch speaker and consider myself very much Dutch, I really struggled settling back in! I didn't understand why I found certain experiences at work upsetting and I didn't realise that I should be way more direct and assertive in order to be effective here. I wish someone had given me a map or unlocked the code!
